Quick Ditch: Depth Chart for Fresno State is OUT
Five quick things from me as we get ready for Football to start Week One. Including some depth chart gamesmanship from Mario.
Eugene, we have a Depth Chart.
For Week One, at least.
My full blownsies Fresno State game preview won’t come out until Friday morning, but seeing as how that will primarily focus on evaluating the Bulldogs, I thought it’d be perfect to put together a quick debrief of Mario Cristobal’s masterpiece of a Week One Depth Chart.
QB1 is set.
Anthony Brown Jr. is officially your starting Quarterback.
Now you can rest, or rejoice, or rant, or riot, or do whatever else you feel like doing, but all discord ends Saturday morning when you admit that the primal forces of nature are far beyond your control, and that it’s best not to put up a fight when those forces come for you.
You’ll only tire yourself out.
Now, Ty Thompson is a full-on QB2. No ifs, ands, or (or)s about it. The dude clearly had a helluva a Fall Camp—much better than what the reports indicated after Spring Ball—and now he gets to spend the foreseeable future getting the second most reps in practice.
Fresno State looked very good in their 45-0 win over the downtrodden UConn Huskies, but I think it’s still safe to anticipate that AB and Ty will probably both see a lot of playing time on Saturday.
That’s why we schedule these little games before the bigger games, after all.
Troy freakin’ Franklin.
In my reciever preview, I mentioned that Troy Franklin was impressing folks this Fall, but I NEVER anticipated that he’d rise to the absolute top of the Depth Chart this quickly.
Even Isaah Crocker has climbed himself up into an (or) position right alongside the guy who I think we all assumed to be the favorite for the job in the first place, Devon Williams.
But apparently Devon “The Never-Beaver” Williams, has been dethroned by Troy “The Never-Husky” Franklin, and I think that only tells us that Oregon’s depth at reciever is even better than advertised.
Big Brandon Dorlus has a new number.
We all expected Dorlus to be in the starting lineup this year. But this is the first I’ve seen that he has changed his jersey number to a very slimming, very fast, number 3.
Consider this: Would you still see Kayvon as a stand-up, speedrushing, outside linebacker-type if he was a clunky number 99 instead of his sleek number 5? Nope. The answer is nope.
Perception is everything. And that’s what makes this Dorlus change notable. He has immediately cut a quarter of a second off his 40 time in my brain and everyone elses, and as far as I’m concerned, that’s as good as actually cutting a quarter of a second off your 40 time.
Mario Cristobal punts on making a decision about the kicker. At least publicly.
I swear, Mario has a talent for anticipating all of the things that reactionary Duck fans will get mad about, and then just going off and doing that exact thing. And I love to watch him work.
He still has the Placekicker position listed as a co-starting role between Camden Lewis (a true hero, without whom we lose to Wazzu and don’t go to the 2019 Pac-12 Title game, let alone the Rose Bowl) and Henry Katleman (probably the better kicker).
I would not be suprised if Katleman and Lewis switched back and forth between extra points and field goals on Saturday vs Fresno State.
I WOULD be suprised if anyone other than The Katlemonster attempted an extra point or a field goal in Week Two in Columbus.
Trust the Process (not in a Sixers way, but rather, in a way that actually works).
I’m going to be on a Duck Triva Show!
